Connect ChatGPT
About 10 minutes, one time. Requires a paid ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise)
with Developer Mode — a one-time toggle, steps below. On Business/Enterprise
an admin must allow custom connectors first.
Part 1 — Enable Developer Mode (one time)
Go to
chatgpt.com → click your profile →
Settings →
Apps & Connectors.
Scroll to Advanced settings → toggle Developer mode on.
Part 2 — Add Rentalope
In Apps & Connectors, click Create → New connector.
Name:
Rentalope · Description:
Run your rental business by talking · MCP server URL:
https://mcp.rentalope.com
copy
Authentication: OAuth — leave Client ID and Client Secret blank. ChatGPT registers itself with Rentalope automatically; there are no keys to create or paste.
Acknowledge the notice and create. ChatGPT redirects to the Rentalope sign-in page — log in, review the approval screen, and click Approve.
Part 3 — Use it in a chat
In any chat, click + (attach) → More → enable Rentalope.
Talk normally. ChatGPT asks you to confirm each action by default — and Rentalope's own safeguards apply on top: rentals always preview first, money actions always require your explicit confirmation.
First things to say
"What's in my Rentalope account?"
"I bought a GE washer/dryer set today for $270, needs a new belt, it's in the trailer."
"Who owes me money?"
Troubleshooting
- No Developer Mode toggle — you're on a free plan, or (Business/Enterprise) your admin hasn't allowed custom connectors yet.
- "This tool cannot be called" — open the connector in Apps & Connectors and refresh its tool list, then start a new chat. A known quirk of ChatGPT's connector support.
- Where do I manage it? — connectors are created and managed on the web at chatgpt.com; mobile picks them up from there.
ChatGPT's custom-connector support is newer than Claude's; if you hit friction,
the Claude path is the smoothest today.
